What happens in the Studio at Frogmouth Hollow?
Frogmouth Hollow is a place where anything is possible. Time to pretend you are God for a little while. See what you want to create, either for your kitchen or yard, make a present for someone, or to coax forward a feeling you would like to have in your life. Come with your life challenges. If it’s a conflict we’ll address it. If it’s a dream we’ll create it. If it’s a fear we’ll mould a new pathway.
How long could I stay in a day?
The very minimum is two hours. This is enough time to create a very simple piece, or to begin one you want to work on in coming weeks. I will keep it for you, or you can take it home and work on it between visits. Talk to me about group and family workshops or weekend workshops.
How long can my child stay focused?
This is very individual. A child who loves art will have no trouble staying focused for two hours. A child who is easily distracted might need to go in the yard to play with the dog every now and then, or visit the cat, or the horses. All are welcome here.
What if I have an emotional issue I want to address using clay?
First we sit down and talk about it, preferably with clay in our hands. From here you can try different methods
1. Eyes closed, hold the lump of clay while touching what wants attention. Let the hands slowly start moving. After a time, open your eyes and see what has begun, then help it along, eyes open.
2. If it is a location ,we could start with some slabs to create the stage, so to speak.
3. If it is a relationship question, we could start with a figure, or two, and put them in relationship to one another, this way and that as the process unfolds.
4. If it is a specific feeling, you could use my face mould, and then add on your own special feeling, modelling with your fingers.
5. You could first draw a picture of what you want to create, then show me, and I will help you make it out of clay.
How does the firing work?
Each piece needs at least two weeks to dry before it can be fired. Once it has been bisqued (first firing), you might be happy with it as is, or you might want to add glazes which would again need to dry to later be fired a second time. The second drying period is much shorter than the first. Maybe a day or a half-day to dry, or even less, if we use the kiln to help things along.
What would it cost me to make a simple piece for my home?
Two hours - $50 AUD
Plus minimal clay and firing - $10 AUD
Plus glaze and the final firing - $20,
Plus studio time for choosing colors and painting the pieces - $50 AUD
Around $130 AUD for a completed piece or several smallish pieces.
This includes four hours of studio time and instruction.
